Want to see permanent food waste recycling solutions on the Island?

So do we! You can help.

Here are two ways you can make a difference today:

1) Write to your Selectboard: Support residential food waste dropoff in your town

IGI is working with the towns to install EcoRich Composters at town dumps. These machines will accept residential food waste and create a nutrient-rich soil amendment that residents can take home to add to their compost piles or use in their home gardens.

Town officials have generally been supportive of the concept of putting food waste recyclers at local transfer stations, but need to know their constituents feel it is a priority worthy of public investment.

Take Action:
Please write to your town Selectboard Members to let them know that you want your townspeople to have the opportunity to divert food waste from the trash stream at your local transfer station.

2) Call your Boards of Health: Encourage town support for at-home composting

The town of Chilmark offers homeowners and residents the opportunity to purchase home composters at a subsidized rate. They offer both a countertop dehydrator and a backyard compost bin. You can find information on this program HERE.

If you would like townspeople in your town to have access to subsidies like these for at-home composting solutions, call or write your town’s Board of Health and let them know!
